Summary Characterization of Important Coastal Habitats along the North Shore of the Maritime Estuary for their Preservation and Enhancement

Several natural sites are recognized along the north shore of the St. Lawrence maritime estuary as being coastal habitats of interest. In 1999, thirteen habitats were identified as important ecosystems during consultations with various actors in the field (sheets 1 to 13). These thirteen coastal habitats were targeted to be integrated into the intervention guide for the protection and development of important coastal habitats produced for the Comité ZIP de la Rive Nord de l'Estuaire (RNE) by the firm Naturam Environnement (RNE) by the firm Naturam Environnement. In 2004, other public consultations held during the Coastal Habitat Workshops allowed local stakeholders to target seven other priority coastal habitats between Tadoussac and Baie-Trinité (sheets 14 to 20) that were not part of the first series (Comité ZIP RNE, 2008). Thus, during the public consultations held in 1999 and 2004, a total of twenty coastal habitats were identified as ecosystems of high ecological value. Floristic and wildlife inventories were then carried out in these environments in order to characterize them in order to better guide future conservation actions. Each technical sheet summarizes the characteristics of different habitats targeted. Although summary floristic and faunal inventories were carried out from time to time in certain sectors of the sites targeted in 1999 and 2004, no systematic inventory exercise was carried out (e.g.: installation of animal capture devices or even carrying out inventory transects with identification of vegetation in quadrats). A brief description of the geomorphology and the use of the target territory are also available in these files. Sheet 7 - Betsiamites River Estuary was partially updated in 2024 by the Comité ZIP RNE in order to keep the terms used up to date.
