Biophysical Characterization of the Montmagny Intertidal Marsh and Restoration of Vulnerable Coastal Habitats (2016-2019)

The Comité ZIP du Sud-de-l'Estuaire carried out a biophysical characterization and completed the first phase of restoration of a part of the Montmagny upper marsh thanks to funding from the Community Interactions Program (CIP) of the City of Montmagny.

The portrait of the state of the high coastal marsh located west of Rivière-du-Sud was completed in the summer of 2016. Erosion by the St. Lawrence is causing the retreat and disappearance of large areas of humid grasslands of great ecological value in this area. We also note the strong presence of exotic invasive species accidentally introduced such as the common reed and some anthropogenic developments that amplify the phenomenon. However, these marshes are unique, since they are composed of plants adapted to fresh to brackish water tides and to the action of winter ice. Some of these plants are exclusively found in the St. Lawrence Estuary region. This is the case of an endangered species, Victorin's gentian.

A plantation of 1,500 square meters of high marsh was carried out using native species (sedge, prairie cordgrass, etc.) and plant engineering (cutting of shrubby willows). Nearly 20,000 plants were planted in the summer of 2017. Awareness-raising activities focused on the enhancement of the richness of coastal flora and fauna will also be offered to local citizens.
