Potential VMEs - Points and Polygons (2025)
This dataset integrates information on Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VMEs) across European seas, harmonised from multiple authoritative sources and cross-referenced with fishing activity (VMS) data from EMODnet Human Activities. It includes both polygon and point layers derived from datasets provided by regional and international organisations, including ICES, NEAFC, OSPAR, GFCM, UNEP-WCMC, EMODnet, and GBIF. Data were standardised using a unified attribute schema, combining empirical observations and modelled habitat maps within the EUNIS classification framework. Overlaps and redundancies were resolved through a semi-automated workflow in QGIS, ensuring consistency and data integrity. The resulting dataset provides the most comprehensive and harmonised representation to date of VMEs and priority habitats in European waters, supporting marine spatial planning, ecosystem-based management, and the protection of vulnerable biodiversity hotspots.
