Mangrove Cover and Composition (Essential Ocean Variable) in European jurisdictional waters (2025)

This layer shows the current known extent and distribution of Mangroves in jurisdictional waters of EU Member States, the United Kingdom (UK) and Norway in the Caribbean Sea, collated by EMODnet Seabed Habitats in 2025. Independent countries in the area were also included to provide a broader picture. The purpose was to produce a data product that would provide the best compilation of evidence for the essential ocean variable (EOV) known as Mangrove cover and composition (sub-variable: Mangrove fringe width and area), as defined by the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS). Mangroves provide essential habitat and nursery areas for many marine fauna, functione as carbon storage, and shelter the coasts from erosion and storm fluxes. This data product is an update of the previous mangrove cover created in 2023 and will be updated with additional data as it becomes available.
